Manhattan is an impressive sight from the air. Getting down to street level, however, the city felt like a third world country: messy, dirty, dilapidated, trashy, shallow and unrefined – excluding the rare moments when you come across areas of architectural beauty and class, such as the Metropolitan Opera House.

In contrast, those moments of classiness seem to be the rule, rather than the exception in Central London.

Thanks for your comment. I was hoping to make it clear that the call “Australia is better than the UK” WAS just based on the one day – and definitely not all days! I certainly wouldn’t be living in London otherwise – and anyway, you don’t move here for the weather – there’s lots of other reasons I hope are pointed out in this blog. The whole blog is a back and forth on this debate really.

Australia is nice for a visit but how can you make a judgement call like “Australia is better than the UK” based on one day when it’s Summer in Australia, seeing as it’s in the Southern Hemisphere, & Winter in London? If I visit Australia in its Winter should I denounce it because England is currently warmer & sunnier?
