I don’t know if I have just been away from home too long and am WAAAAAAYYYY behind the times, but I was surprised by an email my brother (in Dubai) sent me tonight about a MTV show called Freshwater Blue – which as the name implies, is filmed in my hometown of Freshwater(!)

Apparently its Australia’s answer to Laguna Beach…. I’ll save my self further description; here’s what MTV have to say:

“Unashamedly Australian, Freshwater Blue offers a real-life entertaining, humorous and sometimes gritty, fly on the wall look at the lives of 12 young adults from Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Set in Freshwater on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, and for a period on the Gold Coast, Freshwater Blue, produced in a reality-documentary format, reflects universal issues ranging from relationships, friendships, peer pressure, drinking and sex – all told through the eyes of a group of friends eager to start their independent adult lives.”

Why didn’t I hear about this earlier?  Was it because you were all too embarrassed to even admit it out loud??  Please explain.  Please!

PS Again, YES! I know this isn’t about London… but its about the things you miss at home cos you’re here – and that still counts…

So I woke up today to find my lovely London spring weather replaced by (yet another) cold snap!  GRRRR….  I couldn’t help but reminisce about the weather I had been enjoying just two short weeks ago in Sydney.

And for a bit of showing off, let me tell you about my day on Tuesday two weeks back.  Actually, better still, let me show you.

I woke up early to watch the sunrise from the balcony…

I went for a sail with dad and my bro…

I had dinner with friends…

Sigh… just your average day in paradise right?

And I wonder why so many Brits ask me why I moved here?  On days like Tuesday two weeks ago, it’s a hard one to answer.  Except I think it’s safe to say that the weather sure as hell isn’t it.

I was pretty excited about coming home.  I wanted to feel the sun on my back, to wake up and see the ocean, to spend time with my family and friends.  Basically all the things I was not doing in London.

I was also a bit nervous about coming home.  I know I haven’t been very long gone, but I guess I was a little concerned about whether I would still have a place in my home.   A crisis of confidence if you will.  While I do have a tendency to over think and overcomplicate just about everything in my life, I think a lot of expats feel this way about coming home, right??!?

Luckily I was so busy in the lead up to my trip I really didn’t have much time to work myself up into a frenzy like I thought I would.

And so I arrived in Sydney at 7am Saturday morning feeling happy and content.  Mum greeted me at the airport the way she always does after long absences; by running up the passenger exit ramp to give me a hug as early as possible.  It’s embarrassing, but secretly I love it.  Good start, but no rest for the wicked; I had a little time to make myself presentable, then straight into bridesmaid duties with the hen’s day for my favourite bride-to-be.

For the rest of the day I will have to refer to myself as “Zombie Jetlag Lou”.  I know I had a blast, but I’m not sure why.  I know I made conversation (in fact I made a speech) but I couldn’t tell you anything I talked about.  My whole body was buzzing as if I was lying on a vibrating massage chair.  Noises were muffled, my vision slightly blurred, in slow motion.   I experienced erratic spurts of energy (“Yeh, lets go dancing!”) followed by extreme lethargy and micro-sleeps.  I kept asking myself if the champagne was making it better or worse?

But I’m proud to say I made it all the way to 10:30pm (!!!!) when my body just shut down.  I fell asleep on the couch.

PS Tomorrow I’m off to a place I’ve realised is the perfect blend of England and Australia.  Can you guess where?
